    With your mercury mouth in the missionary times And your eyes like smoke and your prayers like rhymes And your silver cross and your voice like chimes Oh, who do they think could bury you? With your pockets well-protected at last And your streetcar visions which you place on the grass And your flesh like silk and your face like glass Who could they get to carry you? Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums Should I put them by your gate, or sad-eyed lady, should I wait? With your sheets like metal and your belt like lace And your deck of cards missing the jack and the ace And your basement clothes and your hollow face Who among them did think he could outguess you? With your silhouette when the sunlight dims Into your eyes where the moonlight swims And your matchbook songs and your gypsy hymns Who among them would try to impress you? Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums Should I put them by your gate, or sad-eyed lady, should I wait? The kings of Tyrus, with their convict list Are waiting in line for their geranium kiss And you wouldn't know it would have happened like this But who among them really wants just to kiss you? With your childhood flames on your midnight rug And your Spanish manners and your mother's drugs And your cowboy mouth and your curfew plugs Who among them do you think could resist you? Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums Should I leave them by your gate, or sad-eyed lady, should I wait? Oh, the farmers and the businessmen, they all did decide To show you where the dead angels are that they used to hide But why did they pick you to sympathize with their side? How could they ever mistake you? They wished you'd accepted the blame for the farm But with the sea at your feet and the phony false alarm And with the child of the hoodlum wrapped up in your arms How could they ever have persuaded you? Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man's come My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums Should I leave them by your gate, or sad-eyed lady, should I wait? With your sheet metal memory of Cannery Row And your magazine husband who one day just had to go And your gentleness now, which you just can't help but show Who among them do you think would employ you? Now you stand with your thief, you're on his parole With your holy medallion in your fingertips now enfold And your saintlike face and your ghostlike soul Who among them could ever think he could destroy you? Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums Should I leave them by your gate, or sad-eyed lady, should I wait?

    Pathetically bad attempt. This is the most lifeless, bland, emotionless version I have ever heard. Shel must be rolling over in his grave hearing this. If you want to actually hear this song preformed as intended, listening to Dr Hook - the boys nailed it.

    I remember Joan had a fling with Bob Dylan way back in the early 60’s. Then Judy had a romance with Steve Stills which resulted in 2 songs on the 1st CSN album. Nostalgia caused by hard weed use

    Far better than the version with Bob Dylan where she has to dum down musically. Their version is nice too. But it's always espectacular seeing a woman expressing herself completely freely.

    When I was a teenager long ago, I loved the two albums she recorded with her husband Richard before his untimely death. Only many years later does it strike me that she never sings solo on the albums despite her beautiful voice.

    • @TanteLeonieCombray
      @TanteLeonieCombray 7 місяців тому

      This song is full of symbolist poetry and biblical references. “The kings of Tyrus with their convict list / Are waiting in line for their geranium kiss.” the kings of Tyrus reference comes from Ezekiel. Much of the imagery is religious in nature and begs for a deeper inspection than saying it is a ballad about loving a girl.

    Je suis sur qu'aujourd'hui personnes n'est capable d'écrire un tel chef d'œuvre, c'est hors du temps. Avec toutes les niaiserie que l'on entend partout actuellement, Angelo Branduardi à réussi à chanter cette pure merveille. Je possède sa discographie complète, c'est une œuvre à elle seule . Bravo l'artiste .ciao ciao

    Con tu boca de mercurio en los tiempos misioneros With your mercury mouth in the missionary times Y tus ojos como humo y tus oraciones como rimas And your eyes like smoke and your prayers like rhymes Y tu cruz de plata y tu voz como campanadas And your silver cross and your voice like chimes Oh, ¿quién creen que podría enterrarte? Oh, who do they think could bury you? Con tus bolsillos por fin bien protegidos With your pockets well-protected at last Y tus visiones de tranvía que colocas sobre la hierba And your streetcar visions which you place on the grass Y tu carne como seda y tu cara como cristal And your flesh like silk and your face like glass ¿A quién podrían conseguir para que te lleve? Who could they get to carry you? Señora de las tierras bajas de ojos tristes Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands Donde el profeta de ojos tristes dice que ningún hombre viene Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes Mis ojos de almacén, mis tambores árabes. My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums ¿Debo dejarlos junto a tu puerta, o señora de ojos tristes, debo esperar? Should I put them by your gate, or sad-eyed lady, should I wait? Con tus sábanas como metal y tu cinturón como encaje With your sheets like metal and your belt like lace Y a tu baraja de cartas le faltan la jota y el as And your deck of cards missing the jack and the ace Y tu ropa de sótano y tu cara hueca And your basement clothes and your hollow face ¿Quién de ellos pensó que podía adivinarte? Who among them did think he could outguess you? Con tu silueta cuando la luz del sol se oscurece With your silhouette when the sunlight dims En tus ojos donde nada la luz de la luna Into your eyes where the moonlight swims Y tus canciones de cerillas y tus himnos gitanos And your matchbook songs and your gypsy hymns ¿Quién de ellos intentaría impresionarte? Who among them would try to impress you? Señora de las tierras bajas de ojos tristes Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands Donde el profeta de ojos tristes dice que ningún hombre viene Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes Mis ojos de almacén, mis tambores árabes. My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums ¿Debo dejarlos junto a tu puerta, o señora de ojos tristes, debo esperar? Should I put them by your gate, or sad-eyed lady, should I wait? Los reyes de Tiro, con su lista de presos. The kings of Tyrus, with their convict list Están esperando en la fila por su beso de geranio. Are waiting in line for their geranium kiss Y no sabrías que hubiera sucedido así And you wouldn't know it would have happened like this ¿Pero quién de ellos realmente quiere besarte? But who among them really wants just to kiss you? Con las llamas de tu infancia en tu alfombra de medianoche With your childhood flames on your midnight rug Y tus modales españoles y las drogas de tu madre. And your Spanish manners and your mother's drugs Y tu boca de vaquero y tus tapones de toque de queda And your cowboy mouth and your curfew plugs ¿Quién de ellos crees que podría resistirte? Who among them do you think could resist you? Señora de las tierras bajas de ojos tristes Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands Donde el profeta de ojos tristes dice que ningún hombre viene Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes Mis ojos de almacén, mis tambores árabes. My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums ¿Debo dejarlos junto a tu puerta, o señora de ojos tristes, debo esperar? Should I leave them by your gate, or sad-eyed lady, should I wait? Oh, los agricultores y los empresarios, todos decidieron Oh, the farmers and the businessmen, they all did decide Para mostrarte dónde están los ángeles muertos que solían esconder To show you where the dead angels are that they used to hide ¿Pero por qué te eligieron para simpatizar con su bando? But why did they pick you to sympathize with their side? ¿Cómo podrían alguna vez confundirte? How could they ever mistake you? Desearon que hubieras aceptado la culpa de la granja. They wished you'd accepted the blame for the farm Pero con el mar a tus pies y la falsa falsa alarma But with the sea at your feet and the phony false alarm Y con el niño del matón envuelto en tus brazos And with the child of the hoodlum wrapped up in your arms ¿Cómo podrían haberte persuadido alguna vez? How could they ever have persuaded you? Señora de las tierras bajas de ojos tristes Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands Donde el profeta de ojos tristes dice que nadie ha venido Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man's come Mis ojos de almacén, mis tambores árabes. My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums ¿Debo dejarlos junto a tu puerta, o señora de ojos tristes, debo esperar? Should I leave them by your gate, or sad-eyed lady, should I wait? Con tu recuerdo de chapa de Cannery Row With your sheet metal memory of Cannery Row Y tu marido de revista que un día tuvo que irse. And your magazine husband who one day just had to go Y tu gentileza ahora, que no puedes evitar mostrar And your gentleness now, which you just can't help but show ¿Quién de ellos crees que te contrataría? Who among them do you think would employ you? Ahora apoyas a tu ladrón, estás en libertad condicional Now you stand with your thief, you're on his parole Con tu santo medallón en la punta de tus dedos ahora envuelve With your holy medallion in your fingertips now enfold Y tu rostro de santo y tu alma de fantasma And your saintlike face and your ghostlike soul ¿Quién de ellos podría pensar que podría destruirte? Who among them could ever think he could destroy you? Señora de las tierras bajas de ojos tristes Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands Donde el profeta de ojos tristes dice que ningún hombre viene Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes Mis ojos de almacén, mis tambores árabes.
